What is a Google Business Profile?

It is the free listing that presents your business on Google Search and Google Maps. Google puts it plainly: when you add and verify your profile, customers can find your business on Search and Maps, and you then control how your information appears. A complete profile answers local searches directly — hours, directions, phone, reviews — without the visitor having to open a website. And it is free: Google states that you can add or claim your business at no charge.

Create the profile or claim an existing one

Two cases. If your business has no listing: go to business.google.com/add, click "Add your business to Google" and follow the on-screen instructions, then select a verification option. If an unverified listing already exists: open Google Maps, search for your business name and city, then select "Claim this business" and "Manage now". If the profile is already verified by someone else, request ownership from the current owner. Before anything else, make sure the address you enter is correct and meets Google’s address guidelines.

Verify the profile: Google’s methods

Verification is required to edit your business info and interact with customers. The available methods are determined automatically by Google based on your business type, public info, region and hours; you cannot choose them. Four methods exist: phone or SMS, email, live video call, and mail (a postcard with a 5-digit code). After you enter the code, Google may review your submission for up to 5 business days. In some cases, verification is instant, notably when your website is already verified in Search Console. Once verified, you get a confirmation email.

The fields that matter

- Name: enter your business name exactly as it appears on your signage and materials, without added keywords.

- Category: choose a precise primary category; you can add up to 9 more. Google states that categories affect your local ranking.

- Address: enter the full and accurate address. If you do not receive customers on site, you can hide the address and set a service area (cities or postal codes).

- Hours: set your main hours, then special hours for holidays or exceptional periods.

- Phone: a primary number plus up to 2 more (mobile or landline, no fax).

- Website: enter the full URL (with http:// or https://) and make sure Googlebot is not blocked on your site.

The description ("From the business") must not exceed 750 characters and must not contain URLs or HTML code.

Photos and videos: Google’s rules

Your photos appear only after the profile is verified. Photo: JPG or PNG format, between 10 KB and 5 MB, recommended resolution 720 × 720 pixels (minimum 250 × 250), in focus and well lit, without excessive filters. Video: 30 seconds maximum, 75 MB maximum, 720p or higher. Add at least the logo, a cover photo, an exterior photo (the entrance helps customers recognize your place) and interior photos. A photo usually takes 24 to 48 hours to appear; Google reviews every upload before publication.

Reviews: how to reply

You must verify your profile before you can reply. From your profile, select "Read reviews", then "Reply" next to the review. Google reviews your replies too: they are usually published within 10 minutes, sometimes longer. Official tips: be professional and polite, short and simple; do not promote; reply helpfully rather than the same "thank you" everywhere. Negative reviews: never share private information, be honest, apologize when appropriate, personalize and reply promptly. Never offer anything in exchange for a review: Google prohibits it and may remove the reviews involved.

Linking the profile to your website and Search Console

The "Website" field must contain the full URL, and your site must not block Googlebot; Google recommends checking in Search Console that no penalty affects the site. In Search Console: add a "Domain" property (DNS verification) or a "URL prefix" property, then prove ownership with an HTML file, an HTML tag, Google Analytics or Tag Manager. Direct benefit: when your website is verified in Search Console, Google may verify your profile instantly. The URL Inspection tool shows how Google sees your pages, and Google Search Central’s SEO Starter Guide also advises submitting a sitemap and publishing useful, original content.
